After doing some research I found there are 3 ways of addressing it: 1) weld or use epoxy to attach reinforcement plates to the body, 2) inject heavy duty cement-like foam into the body cavity, and 3) install the Mason Engineering rear subframe x-brace and strut tower brace. Dec 24 2021 Update: Hello world, My E46 is on all four jackstands, and surprisingly there was almost no rust aside from the rear subframe. I had to expand my arsenal and purchase a few additional tools listed below: Hence, the M3 rear subframe problem. Work with me here: To avoid placing stress on frame structures of bridges and buildings in earthquake prone areas, the construction allows actual shaking. Too rigid of a structure and the bridge may collapse. Gaps are built in, elasticity is designed in. Manuals I know are the most common suspects for the subframe issues on E36 and E46s from the clutch drops being hard on the left rear subframe mount. It only takes an extra 10 minutes to do the seal. Listen to the frog an do your clutch at the same time.
Alot of e46 guys use special 3M Automix™ Panel Bonding Adhesive, 08115 epoxy to install subframe re-enforcement and as a concept it seems like a great idea. Infact, it is the BMW subframe repair procedure to use this exact adhesive with a cracked subframe.
